Since the 1990s, ProSim, a division of the Simulation Solutions Group, has been at the forefront of orthopaedic implant wear testing through a long-standing partnership with the University of Leeds. Together, we have developed advanced wear and fatigue simulators with over 100 stations of testing capacity across leading global orthopaedic manufacturers and testing houses.
Today, ProSim offers a comprehensive suite of electromechanical simulators for both medical and industrial tribological and wear fatigue testing. Our flexible, cost-effective approach has enabled us to expand into both mature and emerging global markets.
We work closely with customers and academic partners to design simulators that exceed appropriate standards, replicating real-world conditions, wider ranges of motion, and higher loads to better understand adverse wear. At the heart of ProSim is a 30-year legacy of innovation, trusted collaboration, and a relentless drive to push the boundaries of fatigue research.
Through participation in major European research initiatives like the Lifelong Joints Project, ProSim has consistently pushed the boundaries of implant wear research.

What kinds of orthopaedic implants can the ProSim range test?
The Medical Simulator range covers hip, knee and spinal implants directly, with a Universal Joint platform that also supports testing of ankles, shoulders, elbows, fingers and cadaveric specimens. A Pin on Plate Tribometer provides bearing surface material wear testing. A Hip & Knee Friction Simulator supports friction testing including Stribeck curve plotting.
Which ISO and ASTM standards do the simulators meet?
Hip Wear Simulator: ISO 14242-1 (2014) and ISO 14242-4 (2018). Knee Wear Simulator: ISO 14243-1 (2009) and ISO 14243-3 (2014). Spine Wear Simulator: ISO 18192-1 (2011). Pin on Plate Tribometer: ASTM F732-00 (2011). All ProSim simulators are designed to go beyond ISO requirements where the application calls for it.
Why Peltier Heaters and Serum Reduction?
In orthopaedic implant testing, machines must simulate the human body by maintaining the test fluid (usually a bovine serum lubricant) at a stable body temperature. Historically, this was done using external pumps and water bath heaters, which required a large volume of circulating serum.
The introduction of dedicated, self-contained Peltier heater/cooler plates changed this: because the system is self-contained directly at the testing station, it requires only one third of the fluid volume needed for older systems, providing significant cost savings over the millions of cycles required for joint wear simulation. The Peltier element automatically maintains the test serum at exactly 37°C ±2°C.
Can ProSim build a custom or bespoke simulator?
Yes. ProSim is able to offer customisation of its simulators to meet a client's specific testing requirements including additional stations, different configurations, custom fixturing and beyond-ISO test envelopes. The engineering team is happy to look at the customisation of existing equipment or design-and-build projects to a customer's specifications.
What kind of after-sales support do you provide?
Every ProSim simulator is supplied with an extendable warranty package: on-site installation and training, a three-month follow-up engineering visit, annual on-site preventative maintenance (extendable for up to five years), and remote/telephone support from the engineering team in Manchester, United Kingdom. Return-to-base refurbishment is also available.
